Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites:

The mission of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS) is to celebrate, explore and steward all that is authentically wondrous about Indiana. The ISMHS is a forward-thinking, unparalleled resource for learning about and appreciating Indiana and its role in the world. We discover, collect, preserve, interpret and present artifacts and exhibits that showcase the stories of Indiana's natural and cultural history, art and science.

Limberlost State Historic Site:

Limberlost State Historic Site is located in Geneva, Indiana. It includes a Queen Anne-style rustic home that was the home of Indiana author Gene Stratton-Porter, her husband Charles Dorwin Porter and their daughter Jeanette from 1895-1913. The two-story, 14 room log cabin is located near Limberlost Swamp and was listed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1974. Stratton-Porter, who began her literary career in 1900, used the home as the base for her field research, natural history collecting, writing projects, and photographic work. Today, the site is utilized to tell the story and preserve the legacy of Gene and her many literary works. It was also the inspiration and setting for three of her novels:
Freckles (1904), A Girl of the Limberlost (1909), and Laddie (1913).

Salary:

This position is filled with a starting salary of $45,000 per year.

About the Job:

As the Historic Site Manager for Limberlost State Historic Site, you will be responsible for all facets of site management including, but not limited to:
public and school programming, site interpretation, visitor service relations, community relations, interaction with traditional and social media, budget management, employee management, volunteer recruitment, historic research, with the ISMHS collections team on implementing collections care and management. You will be required to work collaboratively within the ISMHS system utilizing all resources and expertise available to you, including marketing, development, facility maintenance and restoration, programming, visitor experience, etc.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Planning Priorities and Historic Site Goals
    • Includes long range planning for the historic sites within the ISMHS system, creating annual prioritized objectives and action plans including staffing, budgeting, programming, and equipment needs.
    • Budget control, purchasing and administrative duties
    • Collaborate with ISMHS facilities and historic restoration staff on identifying and meeting capital expenditures
    • Responsible for the implementation of operating policies and procedures including working with the ISMHS system resources required reports, money collection documentation, fiscal reports, payroll documents, monthly reports, attendance. These reports require accuracy and accountability.
  • Site Management
    • Responsible for the day to day operations of the site
  • Personnel Supervision
    • Responsible for work planning and assignment of all site visitor experiences.
    • Responsible for hiring, managing and evaluating all full time staff.
    • Responsible for training employees to properly complete all assigned tasks.
  • Programming and Interpretation
    • Leads the development and presentation of programs, tours and special events to visitors at the site as well as special programs to schools and other interested groups
    • Leads the training and evaluation of site staff participating in tours, program support, customer service, interpretation or general visitor experience for the site
    • Accountable for resolving visitor problems and complaints
  • Restoration and Site Maintenance
    • Includes identifying in collaboration with internal historic preservation and facilities teams any necessary building restoration, repair and new construction
    • Responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of historic site buildings, grounds and equipment
  • Artifact Collections Care
    • Responsible for the care, handling, accountability and transportation of numerous irreplaceable historic artifacts and specimens belonging to the ISMHS system and borrowed from other public institutions and private individuals. Includes the cleaning, storage, inventory, display and security of such artifacts and specimens, in collaboration with the ISMHS collections staff
  • Community and Support Organizations
    • Responsible for developing and maintaining community relationsrelationships and partnerships
    • Responsible for working with ISMHS Chief Development Officer to identify and implement grants, corporate and general operational supplemental support for the site
    • Responsible for working with Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Nature Preserves as well asFriends of the Limberlost community partner

What We're Looking For:

The ideal candidate in this role should minimally have a Bachelor s Degree in nonprofit management, museum studies, business, or related field with at least five (5) years of related management experience in a visitor centric environment this includes children's museums, science centers, art museum, historic sites and history museums.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • An interest and willingness to learn about cultural and natural history, specifically as it relates to Gene Stratton-Porter and the natural history of Indiana, particularly the immediate and regional area
  • Working knowledge of American Alliance of Museums (AAM)standards, mission, and values. ISMHS is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM)
  • Strong working knowledge of institutional system-wide procedures pertaining to fiscal control, purchasing and personnel management
  • Strong working knowledge of State and Federal laws and procedures pertaining to historic sites
  • Be able to organize an event presentation and demonstrate abilities as a public speaker
  • Ability to express yourself verbally and through strong writing skills
  • Computer skills in:
    Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, and interest in learning other programs
  • Serve as the content expert and resource of historic aspects of the site
  • Background knowledge of the flora and fauna of Indiana or eagerness to learn

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
